Founded by Miguel de Mañara, whose life inspired the character of Don Juan by Tirso de Molina, José de Zorrilla and Mozart, he was born in a family palace on Calle Levíes, an interesting place very close to another symbol of 20th century Seville, La Carbonería. His life was happy and dissolute until one night he witnessed his own burial, which caused a profound transformation. With his fortune he founded the Hospital de la Caridad, dedicating the rest of his life to the poor and sick.
The Hospital, attached to the Atarazanas, is another baroque jewel of Seville, with outstanding paintings by the painter Valdes Leal, In ictu oculi and Finis Gloriae Mundi, which crudely expose the banality of desiring power and riches
